BE PART OF BUILLE @ DOLAN’S, IRELAND’S MOST EXCITING NEW MUSIC SHOW!

Think Other Voices takes the 061 (as Gaeilge)…

Get ready to add a new must-do to your autumn plans, as legendary Limerick venue Dolan’s is to play host to a new six-part TG4 music show this August and September.

Fronted by singer-songwriter Eve Belle and IMLÉ’s Cian McCarthy, the series will see a mix of some of Ireland’s best loved acts and most exciting up-and-coming talent take to the stage for a jam-packed six nights of ceol, caint agus craic.

It’s safe to say that Gaeilge is having a moment (the New York Times is calling it the ‘Celtic Revival’, no less), and Buille @ Dolan’s is 100% here for it. There’ll be plenty of famous faces from Ireland’s burgeoning Irish-language music scene on hand, with a wealth of talent and tunes, and more than a few laughs along the way.

Veteran gig-goers will know that there’s no better venue for the show than Dolan’s, one of Ireland’s best-loved and, frankly, best live music venues. In taking to the Dolan’s stage, our acts will be following in the footsteps of some of the best in the business, including the Cranberries, Fontaines DC and Hozier.

Buille @ Dolan’s recordings will take place in Dolan’s Pub and Restaurant on the Dock Road, Limerick on Tuesday 30th August, Wednesday 31st August and Thursday 1st of September, and then again on Monday 19th September, Tuesday 20th of September and Wednesday 21st of September 2022.

Doors open at 6:30pm and recording starts at 7pm. The events will be strictly over 18s, and gig-goers will be required to dress appropriately for a live TV recording.

Dolan’s Pub named overall winner of the Dingle’s Gin People’s Choice Award

Seven well-known and loved Limerick bars received well-deserved recognition at the Bar of the Year Awards in Dublin on Monday, August 22.

The awards have been running for seventeen years and are an extremely prestigious event for those in the bar industry. The 2022 awards are the first to be held in person since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dolan’s Pub came out on top, named overall winner of the Dingle’s Gin People’s Choice Award, along with also being crowned People’s Choice for the Province of Munster. Additionally, they received a silver award for Best Live Entertainment Bar.

Dolans, which has been open for over twenty years, is a treasure in Limerick and is the perfect place to have a drink and or attend an event.

The venue, owned by husband-and-wife Mick and Valerie Dolan, took to Twitter to thank their supporters, saying, “Thank you to all our staff, family, music community and loyal customers. We are delighted to win these awards. It means so much to us all, we are beyond chuffed.”

Mother Macs Public House also took home not one, but two awards. They received the Mad March Hare Gold Award for Traditional Bar of the Year, along with a bronze award for Craft Bar of the Year.

Owners and brothers Mike and James McMahon could not contain their joy, commenting online, “We are speechless.”

The family business opened in 2015 and quickly established itself in the pub industry, becoming highly popular for its craft beer selection.

Several other Limerick bars took home Bar of The Year Awards, including 101 on O’Connell Street, who took home the Gold Award for City Bar of the Year. The Tack Room at Adare Manor was awarded Beam Suntory Cocktail Bar of the Year, Outside Space of the Year was awarded to Fitzgerald’s Woodlands House, while House Limerick came third in Wine Bar of the Year and The Locke Bar took home a Bronze Award for Tourist Bar of the Year.

Limerick: Dispatches from the Treaty city by Golden Plec

It’s been a while since our last Limerick Digest and as always it has been a very busy time on Shannonside with a whole raft of quality releases, and notable live performances.

First up to note is the hugely talented Sinead O’Brien who has delivered a stunning debut album with ‘Time Bend & Break the Bower‘ which is getting notices of real high praise from the musical press all over the globe. Sinead also prefaced the album release with an impressive performance on Jools Holland, and a support slot at the recent Duran Duran gig in St. Anne’s Park Dublin. Don’t miss her at All Together Now Festival, or on her autumn Irish tour which includes an Oct 29th date in her hometown venue of Dolan Warehouse.

The Narolane Records crew were making even more waves than usual, a few weeks ago Murli teamed up with Jafaris to release his latest singe, the extremely powerful Rocks, whilst God Knows has just released Twelve 61 which mines his Zimbabwean roots and sees him collaborate with dancehall artist Jah Master who also happens to be his cousin. Denise Chaila continued her one woman campaign to conquer the music world by teaming up with no less an artist than Ed Sheeran on his recent release 2Step, which followed on from her support slot on his myriad of Irish tour dates. And if that wasn’t enough Denise and the Narolane gang played the legendary Glastonbury a mere few days after being honoured at a civic reception hosted by Limerick’s Lord Mayor, and in recent weeks they have also lent their multiple talents to a very tasty Narolane remix of the Kormac track New Day.

Following their recent stellar appearance at the Seoda Shows Birthday Party in Dolans His Father’s Voice popped into the Piquant Media studio for a session well worth taking a gander at, and congrats to Limerick singer-songwriter Abby Butler who has won through to the final of the Battle of the Bands in Mike the Pies which takes place on July 22nd in the legendary Listowel venue.

Other notable releases from the environs of the Treat City include The Living Wake, the epic psych-out from Post Punk Podge & The Technohippies who will be popping up at numerous festivals during the summer. There was more new music from Japanese Jesus with Bus Weirdo and Silent Vices released their album ‘spirit of envy’. Finally on the release front Emma Langford teamed up with Shoresh for The Unquiet Grave a simply captivating atmospheric track which was one of Luke Kelly’s favourite songs to sing and is based on a 15th century poem. In addition to that Emma also has special re-release of The Winding Way Down to Kells Bay with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra coming out on July 1st in support of the charity Croí, who lead the fight against heart disease and stroke particularly in the West of Ireland, you’ll find it on Emma’s Bandcamp page upon release.

On the live music front there is plenty to look forward to in the coming weeks.

The Bobby Lees who hail from Woodstock, N.Y rock up to the Kasbah Social Club in Dolans on July 2nd, they are a band who have released two albums ‘Beauty Pageant’ and ‘Skin Suit’ and have been described as being “as undisciplined as No Wave, as steeped in comatose cool as ‘70s CBGB’s blank generation, and as stylishly ferocious as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs”. On the same night over in Pharmacia  sees ELIKYA taking the stage, a Congolese rumba orchestra that will make you move in ways you didn’t know you could. Support comes from MISSION DJ’s and Sonny Emerald on the wheels of steel.

Mannequin Pussy, the Philadelphia punk band are set to rock the Kasbah Social Club on July 6th, while the following night, July 7th there’s a crackin’ line-up in the Record Room of The Commercial Bar on Catherine St. with Vacuity and Undercover Martians supporting Cascando’s debut headliner. Cascando are a 60s revival rock band from Limerick city who drift between mellow folk tunes and fuzzy, acid-fried psych rock.

Limerick Pride  comes to a literal climax with not one but two gigs in the city on Saturday, July 9th. DYKE NITE will be held at Pharmacia and kicks offs at the wonderful early time of 4pm running late into the night. Hosted by DJ Egg (House of SÍdhe) and NEEV (Stinx Club). DYKE NITE is a celebration of queer power and love and promises to be a midsummer dyke’s dream: with live drag performances in the lane, followed by DJ sets upstairs from Bambi, DJ Egg and Roo Honeychild.

Whilst up the town Dolans hosts the Limerick Pride Climax Party which offers access all areas excitement with every room in the venue open to all. The bill of fare includes, the fabulous international artist Courtney Act in the Warehouse, while Saved by the 90s takes place Upstairs and Olivia Chau hosts Alterego in the Kasbah.

Finally never an act to be missed is Dundalk’s psychic punk prophet Jinx Lennon, who tops the bill on a L.A.S.A. Presents night in Pharmacia on July 16th.

Before we wrap this edition of the Limerick Digest just a reminder of two hugely exciting events taking place in August. We’ve King of Limerick herself Denise Chaila taking her rightful place Live at the Castle on August 20th. And if that wasn’t exciting enough Féile Na Gréine makes its long awaited return and promises an amazing line-up from August 19th to 21st, we’ll bring you details next time out. In the meantime if you have a music release or event coming up then please get in touch with our local man on the ground John Loftus.

Castle homecoming for Limerickman Dave Keary with Van Morrison by Eric Fitzgerald

VAN Morrison’s current tour is getting rave reviews from the US and UK media and his show here in Limerick at King John’s Castle this Wednesday June 29 is one of the most anticipated gigs of the Summer.
On stage with Van will be Limerick guitarist/producer Dave Keary who has been a part of the band for twelve years. Dave is one of the country’s foremost musicians, session guitarist and producers who was a member of Tuesday Blue signed to EMI and has since worked with artists as diverse as Katherine Jenkins, Sharon Shannon, Jerry Lee Lewis and The O’Malleys.
2022 has been a very busy year for Van Morrison and his band with a new album released and an ongoing busy touring schedule, the 76 year old soul veteran is busier than ever.
Chatting with Dave Keary this week, the guitarist, who has recorded eight albums with Van since 2011, was looking forward to the homecoming gig.
“Touring with the band has been fantastic. There is a huge appetite globally after the pandemic in the entertainment industry and in the public at large to experience music again.
“This is the busiest year I’ve had on a live footing since I joined Van 11 years ago and it’s a credit to the man to be out there working as hard as he is.”
The band has played lots of dates in the UK, Europe, the US and Scandinavia, picking up huge praise from the media along the way,
“A stirring set of classics and fresh cuts with verve, grace and a whole load of talent” – LouderThanWar
“A night of deep musicality.” – The Times.

The band will tour the states another two times before the end of the year but before all that there are two shows in Cork next week and a performance in King John’s Castle this Wednesday June 29.
King John’s Castle is of course a stunning setting for a concert and remarkably this will be Keary’s first time playing music in the venue.
“This is a fantastic location and offers everyone on the stage especially an incredible vista of the city. I think everyone is excited and looking forward to playing there. Hopefully we will have a full house and everyone will enjoy it.”
Dave’s first encounter with Van Morrison and his live show was way back in the early eighties.
On a summer’s night in 1980 Van Morrison delivered a mesmerising set of celtic soul classics at Macroom Mountain Dew Festival. Watching intently from the hill was Dave Keary, a young guitar player at the outset of his musical journey. In 2010 when Van Morrison was looking for a new guitar player, Van’s bass player Paul Moore recommended Dave for the audition.
“I got to meet the man and play the songs, he didn’t say anything. But the fact he didn’t say No! was affirmation enough. It is certainly the most musically rewarding thing that I have ever done to date,” Dave told Limerick Post after he joined the band.
Playing in Van Morrison’s band set him a whole new set of challenges. The catalogue of songs in his career is huge and Van does not work off a setlist live, he’ll just pick a song and go with it. “I have learned nearly 300 songs by Van. And I have another 200 to learn,” said Dave.
He has learned many more songs since then including fifteen new Van Morrison compositions that make up soul legend’s new album ‘What’s It Gonna Take?’ released in May 2022.
There is a public misconception about Van being difficult to work with as a musician. Dave describes him as a generous bandleader. “He gives latitude and scope to the players to bring something to the table. He is very open to that, not dogmatic at all. It is a very inclusive arrangement, a lot more than people would think.”
Morrison looks to capture that live feel of a great band playing together for his recordings.
“He works so quickly and he has a clear and focused vision of the way he wants things to sound and how to achieve that. He comes from an era greatly influenced by Ray Charles and all these jazz and blues greats. The pace is incredible and he goes for an ensemble recording. The essence for Van is capturing that soul and energy from a performance. It keeps you on your toes as a musician”
Van Morrison and his band play King John’s Castle this Wednesday June 29.

Denise Chaila and Ed Sheeran Collaborate on a remix of “2Step”

Denise Chaila has collaborated with Ed Sheeran on a remix of one of his new songs.

Last week, Chaila confirmed the remix of Sheeran's song '2Step' would drop today, and now it's finally here.

Speaking about the collaboration, Chaila said: 'I feel like I’m dreaming or sleepwalking.

'This is without question the biggest opportunity I’ve had in my career so far to grow my aspirations beyond the limits of my own expectations. Being asked to remix 2step was a dream, and being Ed’s support act was beautiful because mostly, it was him supporting me.

'Offering my voice to a song about pushing through difficulty to dance inside joy was, honestly, the perfect way to approach the immensity of what these opportunities mean to me.

'This has been affirming, emboldening and beautiful and I hope what I managed to do here feels good, and right and does justice to Ed’s heart for this song.’
